Future salaries of professional athletes

Record breaking contracts are signed on a yearly basis; this year during tough economic times in which millions have lost their jobs and houses the Yankees spent $423.5 million in the off season to sign three players. This is a clear indication that the amount of money an athlete receives will not be going down. With ticket and concession prices continuing to climb year after year and merchandise for all of professional sports selling at steady rates more money will be available to give to the athletes. New stadiums being built are bigger than ever, they will be able to hold more people which means there will be more people to pay for parking, concessions, and souvenirs. This means that the teams and sports leagues will make more money and that money will go to the players. Athletes will also continue to make money through endorsement deals, and as sports leagues continue to expand and play in other countries the opportunity for endorsement deals will increase.

  1. Salaries in professional sports are a heated debate in today’s economical crisis. Yankees spend around 700 million dollars after free agent players this off season. They also build new stadium worth 1 trillion. In this economical crisis professional teams are spending so much money after players. It has gotten out of hand the amount of money is being given to players. Alex Rodriguez is making 25 million dollars per year for next 10 years. In NBA, Kevin Garnett is making around 30 million per year. Lebron James is going to be a free agent next year, this number will be increased at least 10 million. Compared to these sports I like NFL because of their salary cap. But even with salary cap Albert Hanyeworth got 100 million for 7 years. As you might have notices Matthew Stafford got 6 years 72 million dollar deal and he is just a rookie. So these amounts are growing each year by a huge margin. We have to put a stop to this. This numbers are absolutely ridiculous to be given to one player. This number is sure to hike up every year. In this economic situations, we cannot afford to spend this much money after players. There has to be a limit where every contract has to stop. This is getting out of our hand.

  2. Players salaries have been a huge topic of discussion lately. I am a huge Yankee fan myself, and i find it obscene that this much money is being spent for entertainment purposes rather than being put towards a cure for cancer or diabetes. But hey, where would we be without a brief outlet from our daily problems?

  3. Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of ones work . In today's society, one will be paid more if their job is more economically important. However, teaching is one of the most economically important occupations because our future economy relies on the education of its youth, yet teachers are paid much less than the average professional athlete.
