Future of baseball?

Will baseball, or any sport for that matter, eventually become played by robots? I don't think human athletes will ever be replaced but robots may be used in some new types of sports. Instead of athletes, computer programmers will compete to program robots to play any kind of sports. Kind of like the show "Robot Wars" but with fully programed computers that aren't remote controlled. These teams of robots can compete with a different team of robots programmed by a different group of programmers.

  1. I think that absolutely, one day this may be possible. But the real question is would anyone watch it? Would companies sponsor teams? Would companies pay for advertising at these events? Would anyone even go to these events? How big would the fields be? I'm sure that a robot who's sole purpose was to hit a ball could really get a hold of it, maybe hit it 1000-1500 feet. I would defiantly watch it, if it one day did come out, but I would only watch it once. Nothing can replace the good old human way of playing sports, where true athletic ability is pushed to the limits. I honestly hope that this is one of those technological advancements that flops before it even gets started. If someone were to invest in this technology they are either stupid, or just have so much money that they don't know what else to do with it.

  2. To answer Andrew's question, yes I'd watch it. Probably only one time, but it would be quite interesting to see how well a program would be able to react to sports like baseball. If computer programs could program an entire team of robots to play baseball what's next? Anything may be possible. I think this would be a great field for robotics to really take off in, no pun intended.
