Gone are the days of block shaped football players and a small white ball moving from one side of the screen to the other. Today's video games have far surpassed those that have come before them, the games look better and offer more. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a real game and a video game with all of the new advances to make everything look as real as possible. Before all of the players, teams, and stadiums all looked the same, now everything is made to look just like real life, all of the players look just like themselves along with team uniforms, the stadium, and even the fans where their home teams jerseys. Another simple feature that is in today's games is the ablility to save your progress. If you were one win away from a championship but couldnt play the game at that time there was no way to save the game on a Sega. In newer games you can also create yourself and friends, which adds to the fun because yuo can play as yourself.
Very good post regarding video games. They really have come a long way in a relatively short amount of time. Thinking back to the graphics in older video games and yes how they were very blocky and not realistic at all. Today, it is indeed getting closer and closer to resembling reality. Also, I had no idea that you could not save your progress on a Sega, that is so strange to hear because I am very used to being able to save and quit at the drop of a hat. It is very cool to see how video games are advancing and makes me wonder what the future holds.
ReplyDeleteI often hear people bash video games as a waste of time or a child's hobby. As an avid gamer, I have to disagree. Video games are the first true form of interactive art that the world has ever seen. All of the other forms of art are one way. Video games actually react to what imput you give them, thus creating a different play experience for each player. Technology has come a long way, and so have sports video games. Games have to potential to bring people together, making them an excellent example of how modern technology can combine artisitc, societal, and scientific perspectives together.
ReplyDeleteFirst off -Chris I couldn’t agree more with your posting.
ReplyDeleteVideo games although entertaining, really are a work of art as well. The graphics are so realistic that sometimes you cannot tell a video games from a televised game. The players in the game look and react just like real live players. It is truly amazing! Now some video games are even running off voice commands instead of using the traditional hand held remote.
A negative stigma has always followed video games and it really is a shame. People call the violent and graphic. They feel that many of them are too adult for children thus the push for creating a rating system. I have to say that I disagree. Video games in moderation can be entertaining, help with hand eye coordination and according to the 2002 article; “The Educational Benefits of Video Games” can help raises the gamers self esteem and confidence.
Recently video games have introduced interactive video games, such as those played on the Wii, where the player is the character in the game.
Now that we have realistic looking video games and player interaction, what will they come up with next? Only time will tell.

Before posting this, I glanced at the other blog posts and sure enough, Angela, you took the words right out of my mouth. I feel like a dummy sometimes when I walk into my friend's house while they're playing videogames and I confuse them with actual televised games. Graphics have progressed at an exponential rate. Think back to the days of "Ping" (or what I knew as "Ping" back in the day) The pixels were huge and everything was that greenish poorly lit background with charcoal lines as ping pong paddles and a cluster of four charcoal pixels as a pong ball. Progressing through the years, game distributors like Java decided to go fancy and up it to "Block Breaker," still with the same prime rules. Now at days we even have virtual beer pong where you can flick and throw the pong ball just the way you want to. There's no doubt about it, graphics have had an extremely glamorous make-over.

ReplyDeleteThe games of today are so sophisticated with technologies that it when we look at how games were 10 years ago, we would laugh at how ridiculous the games were but still it used to entertain people. But if we compare how the games were designed and what the game consoles were back then, today’s consoles would make them look like a toy. Back then we didn’t have that many consoles to pick from but today there are consoles out there for every age such as: Xbox, Play station 3, WII, Nintendo, PSP, just to name a few. So now everybody has a choice in what console they want to own.
ReplyDeleteI remember 15 years ago when i was 5 years old and I had a Nintendo game system. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. As I grew up the game systems and the game became greater and more expensive. Games used to be on a cartridge and now technology is so much better where they are all in disc form now. The graphics are so much better on a Play Station 3 or an XBOX. The only downfall about the new video games is that the systems are about 500 dollars and the game are 60 dollars.
ReplyDeleteOk, being a complete video-gamer myself (though I don't like things like Second Life), I've seen the positives and negatives of the 'gamers' life. And I hate that aformentioned stereotype that goes with the video games, as Angela said. Video games have even been used in rehabilitation facilities.
ReplyDeleteOn top of all that, the Wii is being sold out, but not by the age demographic you would think. Nursing homes are buying the systems because the exercise used in the games is enough, and gentle enough, that the elderly people can use it and get in that much needed mobility.
And as everyone has pretty much said, the graphics on these games now are truly spectacular. And sometimes being able to decipher between the real games going on and the video games can be extremely difficult. They're basing their designing of the games off 'reality animation'. Soon we'll be seeing the actual players in the game.
One of the new games Madden 10 is a good source for the kids who love Madden or NFL. Some people think that Video games is not a good source because it spoil kids, but some people think that it is a good source because kids get to learn new things. people are excited about madden 10 because it has lots of new moves. Wii is also a kind of video games that helps kids exercise and learn different things.
ReplyDeleteYea, I remember when I use to play those block shaped video games. Video games are one of the reasons why I love technology. The graphics in today’s video games are great. It almost looks real and you can do many more things in the new games that you couldn’t do back then. Although, we do have to keep in mind that the speed this technology is going, we will see the new era of video games very soon.
