Medical Technology in Today's Sports

Sports medicine has grown tremendously over the past 20 years along with people's love for watching professional athletes. Today's professional teams have full medical staffs and the ability to perform minor surgeries in their medical facilities. Teams only employ the top physicans, for instance the Philadelphia Eagles' top doctors are also head physicians for Jefferson University Hospital, University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center, and Temple University Hospital. Players 40 years ago never had care like the athletes of today do. In the world of sports it isn't uncommon for players to have a minor surgery such as draining fluid in an inflammed knee or shoulder and be back on the field a few days later. Up until 10 years ago this would never happen, there was no such thing as minor surgery in sports. Donovan McNabb torn his ACL in November and was back on the field practicing again by April, that is a six month recovery time. Not too long ago if an athlete torn their ACL it meant the end of their career, doctors didn't have the necessary tools to repair the ACL so that it was as if nothing happened, now they do. It wasn't just the ACL that would end careers it was all types of injuries, today there is almost no injury that an athlete can't recover from and still play at a high level.

  1. It’s amazing how far sports medicine has come. Former career ending injuries are now minor set backs for players. Better technology in medicine/science has allowed doctors to have a greater understanding of the human body and has allowed them to find new ways to heal/repair injuries. Not only does this benefit the sporting world, this also allows doctors to use these same procedures to help the every day person. It allows sport teams to keep their star players in the game so they can generate more revenue. After all it is those players who make games interesting and exciting and bring in the crowds.

Many people enjoy watching sports and its only fair that we can treat the players with advanced medical treatment. In order to keep this economy going we need many changes and inprovements.

  3. The more advanced technology gets the further medicine comes along with it hand in hand. Not only is it great for fans to see their favorite players be able to play in games after suffering such injuries but its nice to the players themselves that they have the best medical options available to them so they know that once their careers are over that they will have had the proper medical attention during their careers to have a healthy retirement. I just hope that the medical advances keep growing because there are still many injuries to which there is no remedy to.

  4. There is no doubt that medicine of the fields that experiences a huge revolution. Years ago an injury that could cost an athlete his career can be resolved in small operation. I agree that there is not such a thing small operation because any surgery requires recovery time and future consequences to the body. The reason athletes enjoy medical treatments and a personal doctor around them is that our society pays for entertainment enough money to finance such privileges.
